Two new Woolworths are expected to be opened in West End in 2020 as the Retail Giant is welcomed as the anchor tenant of both West Village and the Pradella development.
If West Village Woolworths opens as planned in 2020, it will be the first full-line supermarket in West End in 20 years.
A Woolworths spokeswoman said the company considered a variety of elements before deciding to bring a new supermarket to a new location, including the area’s population growth and community support.
“As West End continues to undergo significant population growth as well as an increasing working population, we are delighted to be able to provide customers with increased choice, value and range in conveniently located supermarkets,” a Woolworths spokeswoman said.
It is predicted that by 2020, the local population will have grown by more than 125% since 2000, from about 14,000 to nearly 32,000.
West Village Project Director Mr Andrew Thompson said that there had been significant under-provision of retail and convenience shopping over the past few years for the West End community.
“Research we conducted as part of our Development Application indicated that local residents are spending around $81 million a year in surrounding areas such as Buranda and Toowong because West End is under serviced by supermarkets,” Mr Thompson said.
“This new Woolworths will ease the retail spend leakage and keep shoppers in the area to support the local traders and reinforce Boundary Street as the retail heart of the West End-South Brisbane peninsula,” he said.
The West Village Woolworths will be positioned approximately 150 metres from the existing Coles supermarket, which opened in October 2000. While the Woolworths at the Pradella development will be about 450 metres down the road from the Aldi West End which opened in July 2014.
